That awkward moment when…

Hola Chicas Y Chicos

Since this is my first blog post I should probably explain what just happened.
If you have been following everything that has been going on for the past 10 hours you would have known by now that there was a stabbing in Lake in the Hills.

Let me set some background up for you. I am alerted of this story from four different people at the same time (thanks for all the tips). At first everyone was saying that something major happened at Sunset Park. I found out from the Daily Herald that it was a stabbing in Lake in the Hills, not a Sunset Park.

I called at breaking news team into action. We met at School Street Station Bistro in Huntley, IL and his the story head on. Immediately we made phone calls to the police department and starting sifting through records to get something out of this story.

In the meantime, we are redesigning our site so we thought it would be appropriate to take down the site during winter break and launch the news design on January 1st. Obviously that was a serious planning error, not knowing that a major breaking news story was going to happen. We used Tumblr and Facebook notes to report the story until we could successfully relaunch at about 10:30 pm.

After digging through mounds of research we figured out who owned the property where the crime took place and also found prior information on the suspect. Both of those pieced of information set us ahead of our competitors.

So…that awkward moment when one of the biggest stories of the year happens while your website it down.

Not the best of luck, but I think we covered this story well.

I want to put my prayers and thoughts into the victim and hope they have a miraculous recovery.
